Frontier Communications’ internet service appeared to suffer a major outage Friday, in the Portland area and beyond. Reports indicated service was improving, with intermittent connections before noon.

Downdetector.com reported a severe spike in problems beginning around 11 a.m. Friday. Subscribers reported connection problems all across the country.

Whoa looks like Frontier outage is nationwide, phone systems and website down too.

Frontier serves Washington and east Multnomah counties in Oregon, and many rural parts of the state. It’s not clear if the outage also affects Frontier’s landline phone service or its cable TV service, which is available in Portland’s suburbs but not in other parts of Oregon.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but confirmed the outage in response to subscribers’ complaints on Twitter. It had no estimated time for restoring service.

The timing is especially poor for subscribers in the Portland area, with many people working from home during Friday’s ice storm.
