@JohnCornyn: “Nice birthday present from my colleague, Senator Cruz”

John Cornyn and Ted Cruz’s friendship appears to be blossoming—  the two Texas U.S. Senators put their relationship on full display Thursday on the senior senator’s birthday.

Cruz gave Cornyn a pair of bright red boxing gloves for his 65th birthday. Cornyn tweeted his thanks to the junior senator, saying, “nice birthday present from my colleague.”

“John, thanks for helping lead the fight,” Cruz wrote on the gloves. “Happy birthday!”

Earlier this week, Cornyn sparred with U.S. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minnesota, on Cruz’s behalf during a hearing for attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions.

Franken said Cruz misrepresented him during another hearing for Sessions, when Cornyn interjected that the Minnesota senator and said he was “disparaging a fellow member of the committee here in his absence.”

“Well he should be here,” Franken said.

“We’re here to talk about the president’s nominee and not a colleague,” Cornyn replied, adding that it was untoward and inappropriate to speak about Cruz without him present.
