SAN ANTONIO — Multiple emergency response teams, including a bomb squad and K-9 units, responded to reports of suspicious bag on the city’s West Side Friday after one dog unit got two “hits,” according to authorities.

The reports of the bag came in around 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of Poplar Street and Zarzamora Street.

Capt. Stephen Ersch, a spokesman for the San Antonio Fire Department, said a VIA supervisor saw the suspicious bag on top of a bus stop and called in a VIA K-9 unit to check it out.

The dog got two “hits,” meaning there could have been a bomb, Ersch said.

Police, firefighters, a bomb squad, a K-9 unit and VIA authorities then responded to the scene.

But the police department’s K-9 unit returned no hits, according to Ersch. Police were able to remove the bag from the top of the stop shelter and x-ray it.

“No bomb, no device,” Ersch said. “Just a satchel with some clothes in it.”

Traffic on Zarzamora Street was reopened around 9:20 a.m.
