CLEVELAND, Ohio – You’ve heard of betting a beer or two over a game? A pair of breweries – one in Atlanta, one in New England – are taking that to another level with Super Bowl LI.

Scofflaw Brewing Co. in Atlanta and Shipyard Brewing Co. in Portland, Maine, are backing their respective teams in Sunday’s game – the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. The dueling breweries are putting their money where their beer is:

A rep for Scofflaw says the losing brewery will brew a special batch of beer from a recipe chosen by the winning brewery. It will include indigenous ingredients from the winner’s state, and will be named by the winning brewery.

The day it is tapped, the losing brewery also must fly the winning team’s flag for one week or until the beer is gone – whichever comes first. The losing brewery also will send a case of its beer to the winner.

The folks at Scofflaw look to send a variation of Basement, a New England-style India Pale Ale.

“We like breaking the rules as much as anybody, so we’re thinking about making a Tom Brady-style IPA that stretches the boundaries,” said Matt Shirah, owner and co-founder of Scofflaw, in a release. “… maybe we should call it ‘Dirty Bird Basement,’ since the Falcons will be dancing in the Patriots end zone all game.”

Shipyard founder Fred Forsley stands by his favored Patriots, saying, “We won’t be flying any Falcons flag here. I think we’ll call our beer ‘Feel the Pressure,’ ” he added, referring to the Deflategate scandal that resulted in Patriots quarterback Tom Brady being suspended for four games at the beginning of the season.

Shipyard Brewing Co. has been around since 1994 – ironically, the year Atlanta hosted its first of two Super Bowls. Scofflaw opened its doors last year.

Both breweries said they encourage anyone to reach out with name suggestions for the beers. Head to Facebook for Scofflaw or Shipyard, or find them on Twitter @scofflawbrewing and @shipyardbrewing.
