Several early morning crashes caused by icy condition and involving multiple vehicles have closed portions of Portland-area freeways. A pre-4 a.m. crash on Interstate 5 southbound near Capitol Highway involved more than 10 cars and semis and closed the freeway in both directions for more than an hour. Graders were observed being used to clear cars from traffic lanes.
The ramp from Interstate 405 southbound to I-5 southbound is was also closed as of 5 a.m. Traffic was being diverted northbound onto Interstate 5.
U.S. 26 was reported to be passable as of 5 a.m. with light traffic moving slowly up and over the Sylvan Hill.
Forecasters for the National Weather Service expect freezing temperatures to linger through the Friday morning commute with some areas seeing just rain (especially south of the city) and others experiencing freezing rain that will stick to the roads.
ODOT recommends delaying your trip until later in the day.
TriMet reports buses will be chained this morning and can only travel 25 mph. Expect delays. MAX lines ran through the night to keep the lines from freezing. Currently lines are operating on a normal schedule. But that can change. Some bus lines have been canceled or will be on snow routes. Check www.trimet.org before you head out.
TriMet Update 5:10 a.m.; Line 20 is on snow route. No service on Barnes Road or West Burnside between St Vincent Hospital and Southwest 15th Avenue. Lines 18, 51 and 63 are canceled due to icy road conditions.
