Glens Falls

Red and black balloons neatly adorned the backs of the chairs on the Glens Falls girls’ basketball team’s bench. The school’s band entertained a raucous GF Nation crowd Thursday night, anxiously awaiting the spectacle that was about to unfold.

And, in the interest of family tranquility, two milestones were reached in the order senior point guard Lucy Tougas wanted them to be.

Lucy Tougas and Sophie Tougas both entered the Senior Night contest against Queensbury on the precipice of 1,000 career points. Sophie Tougas, a sophomore, has led the Indians in scoring all three of her varsity seasons. She came into the game with 996 points, with Lucy Tougas right behind at 991 points.

But it was Lucy Tougas that reached 1,000 points first when she grabbed a rebound and scored with 1:25 left in the first quarter. Sophie Tougas got her 1,000th when she drained a stepback 3-pointer with 17.6 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Glens Falls remained undefeated in Foothills Council play with a 58-37 victory over Queensbury.

“This feels good. It is really special to be able to do it as the same game as my sister. That made it 10 times better,” Lucy Tougas said.

“It was amazing. It worked how we wanted it to,” Sophie Tougas said. “We really just went with the flow of the game. Everything worked out. It was good.”

Truth be told, however, Lucy Tougas wanted to beat her younger sister to the milestone.

“I did. I’m not going to lie,” Lucy Tougas said.

Glens Falls coach Mark Girard, per Senior Night tradition, started Lucy Tougas along with fellow seniors Caitlin Hogan, Emilie Moses, Emma Bayle and Maggie Girard.

Lucy Tougas, the 2016 Times Union Small-School Player of the Year, immediately went to work against the Spartans.

She scored on a drive, posted up twice for buckets and drained a stepback jumper to tally eight quick points.

The crowd erupted when Lucy Tougas converted her fifth basket of the opening quarter to reach 1,001 career points.

“It was just overwhelming happiness for her,” Sophie Tougas said. “She scored over 1,000 points as a point guard. I don’t know of any point guards that have done that, so it was special for her to do that. I was relieved that it happened in the first quarter and pretty quickly.”

Sophie Tougas scored off a steal to provide Glens Falls (15-2 overall, 11-0 league) a 17-6 advantage. After a Queensbury miss, the standout sophomore buried her 49th 3-pointer of the season to surpass 1,000 career points.

“You couldn’t write the script any better. Everything went perfect,” Girard said. “It was fitting that (Sophie) pops out for a 3 and Lucy was banging around in there.”

“It is great for her to do it so early in her career,” Lucy Tougas said of her sister. “She is probably going to be one of the best platers to ever come out of Glens Falls, so it is really special. I love that I got to play with her when she scored her 1,000th point. I’m sure she will break more records.”

Lucy Tougas finished with a game-high 22 points to go along with five assists and five blocks. Sophie Tougas added 12 points and five rebounds.
