The Boulder County Coroner’s Office announced Thursday that it has ruled the cause and manner of death of a man whose remains were discovered near Eldora Mountain Resort last year as undetermined.

In a news release, the coroner’s office said that after examining 83-year-old Ervin Mettler’s remains, it determined that the cause and manner of his death was best left undetermined.

Mettler’s skeletal remains — including a foot in a boot — were found in two locations near the Nederland-area ski resort last summer. The remains had likely been in those locations for several months based on their conditions.

Mettler was a Denver resident, and a friend attempted to report him missing to Denver authorities, but no report was taken because a family member did not report him missing.
