As if a greasy burrito isn’t unhealthy enough, its packaging could also be bad for you.

According to a new study found in the journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters, the paper that fast food is packaged in may contain chemicals linked to serious health issues.

Researchers tested more than 400 wrappers from 27 fast-food chains around the country and found that one-third of the packaging contained fluorinated chemicals, which are known for their grease-repellant properties.

Unfortunately, this stain-resistant compound has unhealthy consequences.

“The most studied of these substances has been linked to kidney and testicular cancer, elevated cholesterol, decreased fertility, thyroid problems and changes in hormone functioning, as well as adverse developmental effects and decreased immune response in children,” cites the report.

To lower exposure to these chemicals, research authors say to take the food out of the packaging as soon as it’s served, or ask to have your fries or dessert be put in a paper cup.
