Crabbing and digging bay clams remain open and safe along the north and south Oregon Coast despite the closure Wednesday of bay and ocean crabbing (only) on the central coast between Heceta Head and the Coos Bay north jetty.

The area includes all recreational crabbing in the ocean between those two points, but the area includes only Siuslaw and Winchester bays.

The closure in the two bays came after a spike in domoic acid during testing last week of crab taken offshore from Winchester Bay.

In a news release late Wednesday, the Oregon Department of Agriculture and Department of Fish and Wildlife said decisions about commercial fisheries in the area “will be made soon.”

Meanwhile, bay clamming remains open in both Winchester and Siuslaw bays despite the crab closure.

All sport crabbing, ocean and bay, and bay clam digging remain open north of Heceta Head, including Yaquina, Siletz, Nestucca, Netarts, Tillamook, Nehalem, Necanicum and lower Columbia bays.

Razor clam digging remains closed, however, along the entire Oregon coast.

Washington razor clam digging remains closed on Long Beach, but also on Wednesday, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced a six-day clam season on Twin Harbors, Copalis and Mocrocks beaches, starting Feb. 7.

It’s that state’s first dig at Twin Harbors since late November.
