VINELAND — Two people accused of shoplifting crashed their car during a getaway after allegedly stealing a socket set from a Tractor Supply store, police said.

Jose A. Romero, 53, of Jackson Drive, in Vineland, and Taralynn Torres, 36, of Black Horse Pike, in Mount Ephriam, were both charged Monday with shoplifting. Torres was also charged with hindering apprehension.

Romero allegedly stole a socket set worth $99 from the Tractor Supply on South Delsea Drive and then left in a white Impala. While Vineland police were at the business, a collision occurred in the area of Delsea Drive and Sherman Avenue involving a white Impala and another vehicle.

Torres was alone in the car when police arrived and she denied being involved in the shoplifting. However, an investigation revealed that Torres drove Romero to the Tractor Supply and he was in the car when it crashed but fled before police arrived, police said.

Authorities found the socket set and Romero near the crash scene.

Romero was also arrested for a Camden Municipal Court warrant. Authorities released both on summonses.
