MILLTOWN — The large crowd roared as Milltown Mel — New Jersey’s own version of Punxsutawney Phil — failed to see his shadow Thursday morning, predicting an early spring.

The crowd gathered early at the American Legion Post 25, eagerly awaiting the appearance of the borough’s prominent prognosticator. Everyone hoped for good news.

This year, Mel’s prediction was not in line with Punxsutawney Phil, who saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter, according to Pennlive.com.

However, some, like Joanne Mieszkowski, of East Brunswick, felt that this year’s winter has been so mild, Mel’s prediction did not matter all that much.

The original Milltown Mel died in July 2015, but his companion took on the same name, keeping the tradition alive.

Susan Johnson, who was at the event with her husband, Christopher, and three children, said, “We live up the street, and we came out for good ol’ small town values.”

Ruth Novak and Bess Haefner, both of Milltown, have attended every event since its start eight years ago.

“Because we’re crazy,” said Novak, explaining her reasoning for coming out each year. “Like my daughter says, we get up early to see a rodent.”
