A 36-year-old Toronto man has been charged with what police called a hate crime — the assault of an elderly black woman at Finch Station.

According to the Toronto Police Service, the man reportedly assaulted a 66-year-old woman by knocking her to the ground inside Finch Station on Wednesday afternoon.

Police also alleged he shouted racial slurs at the woman as he assaulted her.

Officers were called to Finch Station around 2 p.m. Wednesday, where bystanders had apparently stopped the attack and restrained the suspect.

The woman was bruised and had cuts and scrapes. Police said she was treated at the scene of the attack and didn’t go to hospital.

Peter Dwyer of Toronto is charged with one count of assault relating to a hate crime. He is due to appear court on Thursday morning.
