Baltimore County Police are stepping up efforts to find a 15-year-old girl who went missing from her Catonsville home nearly a week ago.

Michelle Simmons, a freshman at Catonsville High School, was last seen at 6:30 p.m. Friday at her Tanglewood Road house, according to police.

The girl’s mother, Cheryl Simmons, discovered her daughter was gone around 9:40 a.m. Saturday, she said.

The mother found a note in Michelle’s handwriting that said she was running away, and she threatened to harm herself if people started looking for her, according to the police and mother.

The police helped arrange media interviews with Cheryl Simmons on Wednesday afternoon to increase awareness of the case.

Officer Jen Peach, a county police spokeswoman, said it is unusual for children who run away to threaten to harm themselves.

Michelle Simmons does not have her cellphone with her, police said.

"There’s no way to reach out to her," Cheryl Simmons said.

Peach said authorities are hoping the girl’s friends, friends’ parents or Michelle might call them.

Simmons is 5-feet-4 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds, has brown eyes and wavy, dark-brown hair bleached in the front.

The case is being investigated by the Baltimore County Police Department Crimes Against Children Unit. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 410-307-2020.
