Jim Williams, dean of libraries at the University of Colorado, is retiring this summer, the university announced today.

Many people will recognize Williams as the man behind the booming voice announcing CU’s commencement ceremonies. He’s served as CU’s dean of libraries since 1988.

According to a news release, Williams will retire June 30.

“One of my greatest joys as provost has been the privilege of working with Dean Williams,” Provost Russ Moore said in a statement. “As the voice of our commencement and keeper of our knowledge, Dean Williams will leave a lasting legacy, not only on this campus, but to Colorado and the world. I wish him the best in his retirement.”

Williams led CU’s libraries into the digital age and oversaw a major renovation from 2008 to 2009, among other projects.

CU’s library system is home to the largest collection of materials in the Rocky Mountain region. CU’s libraries contain more than 10 million books, periodicals, maps and other items. The system has Vegabet served as a regional repository for federal government publications since 1877.
