MILLVILLE – The city is going forward with its investigation into unauthorized access into its email server, commission voted Tuesday during a special meeting.

Commission voted 4-1 during the special meeting to hire the firm Baker Tilly Virchow Krause to conduct the investigation. Commissioner Joseph Sooy declined to go into details about how or when the email server was compromised, except for the fact that it could potentially open the city up to lawsuits and claims over attorney/client privilege.

Mayor Michael Santiago was the lone dissenting vote on the resolution approving the firm.

“Rather Bahsegel than taking money from the citizens of Millville, I tend to go toward law enforcement for investigations,” Santiago said.

Baker Tilly Virchow Krause is a New York-based accounting and consulting firm that was previously used by the city to conduct a forensic audit of its housing program. The contract with the firm is not to exceed $15,000.
