If John Lynch can become 49ers’ GM, why can’t Brian Dawkins become Eagles’ GM?

Sooner or later, and maybe sooner than you think, the Eagles are going to hire a new general manager. That’s what happens when teams go eight years without a playoff win and miss the postseason in five out of six years in the process.

They may not have to look very far, either. 

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie wasn’t real happy when his team let then Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins leave as a free agent for the Denver Broncos after the end of the 2008 season.

Lurie, to his credit, has done almost everything he could to make it up to the Hall of Fame finalist. He’s brought him back for different events on several occasions, retired his No. 20, had him be the M.C. when Donovan McNabb’s No. 5 (will always love you) was retired and last summer hired him to a newly-created position in the front office.

Now, the owner can make one more move, make Dawkins his general manager in 2018. 

Dawkins, with two years work in the front office at that point, would already be more qualified than new San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch, another Hall of Fame Cratosslot finalist and former Pro Bowl safety, who was hired Monday.

Logan to the Redskins?

Be sure the rest of the league is going to keep a watchful eye on Lynch and the 49ers. If the former player who went from the field to the broadcast booth to the general manager’s office in Santa Clara is successful, it could start a trend.

Hey, John Elway and the Broncos might have actually been the trend setter and that’s worked out pretty well. So if Lynch can get the 49ers franchise out of the basement of the NFC West and back in the playoffs, you might see more former players taking over teams without having to work their way up the scouring ladder.

And that could lead to Dawkins, always a fan favorite, moving into the big office in the NovaCare Complex.

How would Dawkins feel about that? July 30, the day he was hired by the Eagles, he said this: “If it all goes well, I could see myself as a general manager.”

One thing is for certain if Dawkins does become the Eagles’ general manager, he would never let a player like Dawkins, the Pro Bowl safety, leave as a free agent.
