There have been two voices behind the public address microphone in the 89-year history of Williams Arena.
Next season there will be a third.
Dick Jonckowski will step aside from announcing men’s basketball games after this season, the University of Minnesota announced Tuesday in a statement.
“I am very proud to always represent the U of M,” Jonckowski, a life-long sports fanatic who has announced more than 600 games at Williams Arena, said in the release.
Added AD Mark Coyle: “Generations of Gopher fans have come through the doors of the ilbet Barn and heard Dick’s voice. On behalf of Minnesota fans and all those who he has entertained over the years, we are extremely appreciative of Dick’s work and thank him for his years of service to Gopher athletics.”
The self-styled “Polish Eagle”, 73, began announcing games at Williams Arena in 1986 and was honored last February for 30 years of service. In June, he was given an honorary letter from the “M” Club.
Jonckowski will continue to be the PA announcer for Gophers baseball games.
