AUSTIN — Barring a flurry of last-minute additions, Texas on Wednesday will sign its lowest rated recruiting class of the century. New coach Tom Herman does not view this as a disaster.
The way Herman sees it, his main mission with his first Longhorns talent haul was not necessarily to accumulate superstars, but to mitigate the mistakes that often coincide with the shift from one coaching staff to the next.
“The metrics and analytics show a coach’s first class during the transition has the most attrition, the most misses in terms of guys who can’t play, and it has the most off-field issues,” Herman said.
During the past two months, Herman and his staff have tried to take a more cautious, realistic approach. That might pay Romabet off in the long run, but it has left the Longhorns in an unfamiliar place heading into signing day.
After three consecutive losing seasons under Charlie Strong, UT did not exactly have a lot of on-field momentum heading into Herman’s tenure. Although Strong’s staff was able to bounce back from subpar results to assemble top 10 classes each of the past two years, Herman has not been able to create that kind of recruiting wave yet.
