BARCELONA, Spain, March 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei and BJFF received the GSMA GLOMO award last week at MWC Barcelona 2024 for “Outstanding Mobile Contribution to the UN SDGs” for an AI-powered solution designed to prevent the extinction of wild Atlantic salmon in Norway.
“We are very honored to accept the GSMA GLOMO for our TECH4ALL project, and we especially thank our partner BJFF for their commitment and support,” said Lu Yong, Senior Vice President of Huawei and President of Huawei European Region. “The salmon project shows the great potential of technology to conserve nature while driving the sustainable development of local communities. Huawei will continue to use innovative technologies to build a greener world.”
Launched in 2021 under Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative and developed with local partners BJFF, Simula Consulting and Troll Systems, the solution emerged within three years in response to an invasive species, the humpback salmon, which threatens salmon. local in the rivers of Norway.
The solution, the first of its kind in the world, filters humpback salmon from the river system, preventing them from continuing upstream to spawn.
“We are immensely proud to collaborate with Huawei and their partners on this pioneering project. The cutting-edge technological solution we have in Berlevåg is a successful recipe to stop humpback salmon, and it is inspiring for us to gain global recognition at MWC Barcelona 2024” , explained Geir Kristiansen, president of BJFF. “This project not only protects our rivers and wild Atlantic salmon, but also shows how innovation can address environmental challenges around the world.”
The GLOMO jury described the project as an “excellent and scalable idea: the application of self-powered artificial intelligence and mobile technology to precisely solve a problem, with great execution and impressive results.”
How the solution works
The fish swim through a tunnel installed with an underwater camera and a smart gate controlled by algorithms.
The algorithm identifies different types of fish, recognizing, for example, the characteristic hump of the male humpback salmon and the tail pattern of the female. With an identification accuracy of over 99%, the system instructs the gate to remain closed to filter invasive species into a holding tank, but to open to let other fish swim upstream.
Between June and September 2023, the last salmon spawning season in a biennial cycle, pilot projects in the Storleva and Kongsfjord rivers successfully screened more than 6,000 humpback salmon.
The manual method requires volunteers to stand in the river, identify humpback salmon by sight, and remove them by hand. Not only is this method time-consuming and labor-intensive, but many fish are accidentally injured or killed in the process. In contrast, the automated solution does not harm the fish and reduces the manual workload by 90%.
Record
Humpback salmon were introduced to Norwegian rivers in the 1960s to increase the food supply. However, the invasive species quickly grew in number and soon began competing with wild Atlantic salmon for resources and spawning grounds. Its impact has caused the population of the native species to be reduced by half since the 1980s.
With salmon central to Norwegian culture and economy, the issue remains a national concern.
The success of the solution and its potential to spread throughout Norway have given hope of solving the threat of extinction of wild Atlantic salmon.
The GLOBES
The GSMA GLOMO Awards are held each year at MWC and honor “the best of the best in the mobile ecosystem and beyond.” Decided by 200 independent judges, there are 30 awards up for grabs across six categories. Huawei took seven GLOMOs at this year’s MWC.
