– Huawei and UNESCO donate ICT equipment to the Ethiopian Ministry of Education in the framework of the open schools project
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, December 20, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — UNESCO and Huawei donated ICT equipment to the Ethiopian Ministry of Education last week under the Technology-Based Open School Systems for All (TeOSS) project, which The two partners have been executing in Ethiopia, Egypt and Ghana since 2020.
As part of the three-year project, which ends this year and falls under Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative, UNESCO and Huawei provided 480 tablets, 48 hotspots and 24 smart boards to 24 beneficiary secondary schools in different regions of Ethiopia.
“I extend my gratitude once again to UNESCO and Huawei for their dedication to education and for this important donation at this critical time,” said Ayelech Eshete, Minister of State in the Ethiopian Ministry of Education. Referring to secondary school beneficiaries, he added: “It will allow them to explore diverse educational resources, expand their knowledge beyond textbooks and connect to a broad global network of information and learning experiences.”
The team will go some way to supporting the project’s broader goals of bridging the digital divide and improving inclusion and equity in education by building the capacity of educators and institutions.
“We mark an important milestone in this journey by witnessing the delivery of the latest ICT equipment to secondary schools across Ethiopia,” explained Dr Rita Bissoonauth, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office to the AU, UNECA and representative of Ethiopia.
“These schools, which have been carefully selected by the Ministry of Education and the respective regional education offices as beneficiaries of this project, will now have the opportunity to integrate technology into their classrooms, offering students opportunities to improve learning, collaboration and skill development.
In Ethiopia, the three-year TeOSS project focuses on creating ICT infrastructure to connect pilot schools, train teachers and students, and build an integrated learning management system with a teacher training platform. The project’s broader objectives include creating crisis-resilient school systems that ensure continuity of learning under both normal and crisis conditions, making educational resources available in the home, classroom and other settings.
Since the project’s inception in 2020, project partners have designed and evaluated project outcomes in Ethiopia, Egypt and Ghana with a view to scaling up the project in Africa. Special emphasis is placed on reaching schools in low-income countries and transforming them into technology-enabled schools that can support lifelong learning opportunities for all and educational equity and quality for students.
The partnership between UNESCO and Huawei is supported by the Ethiopian government’s continued efforts to empower its students and citizens to become active participants in the digital world, ensuring they are well prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
