-Asyad spearheads green shipping initiatives with adoption of wind power on world’s largest ore transporter
MUSCAT, Oman, Nov. 20, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Asyad Group, Oman’s global integrated logistics provider, has signed an agreement with Brazilian mining company Vale to transform the maritime movement of iron ore. The collaboration includes installing rotor sails on the world’s largest ore transporter, an Asyad-owned Valemax vessel, to harness wind propulsion technology and drive energy efficiency gains while significantly reducing emissions. This innovative initiative sets a new standard for sustainable shipping practices on a global scale.
Under the agreement, Asyad Shipping, part of the Asyad Group, will manage the modernization of the Sohar Max, a 362 meter long and 65 meter wide vessel, with a massive cargo capacity of 400,000 metric tons. The rotor sails, developed by leading British manufacturer Anemoi, will be installed on the Valemax in the second quarter of 2024, with extensive testing to follow.
With five cylindrical rotors rising to approximately 35 meters in height and 5 meters in diameter, Valemax’s rotor sail system will offer twice the wind area of the sails used on the Guaibamax ships, which have a capacity of 325,000 tonnes. This advanced technological upgrade is expected to achieve an improvement of up to 6% in efficiency and a reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions of up to 3,000 tonnes per year per ship.
Asyad Shipping, a leader in sustainable maritime solutions, has become the first company in the MENA region to secure a $35 million sustainability-linked shipping agreement that establishes a structure that tracks performance objectives against with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and compliance measures with the Energy Efficiency Operational Index (EEOI) standards.
Dr. Ibrahim Al Nadhairi, CEO of Asyad Shipping and Drydock, highlighted the Group’s strict commitment to the adoption of cutting-edge technology. He stated: “Asyad Group remains steadfast in its determination to maintain the highest standards of operational efficiency and environmental sustainability in the Middle East logistics sector. This landmark project aligns perfectly with our corporate strategy, which places primary emphasis on integration of world-class environmental technologies and best practices in shipping. Our pursuit of these rigorous standards, supported by the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO), aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from international shipping by 40% by 2030. Anticipating wide-scale adoption of similar innovations across our fleet, we envision a future full of limitless promise.”
