Institut Marquès presents at the National Congress of the Spanish Fertility Society the first international study that evaluates the success rate of In Vitro Fertilization with egg donation in women who have overcome Leukemia or Lymphoma. Women who have suffered hematological cancer manage to have a baby thanks to Assisted Reproduction in 73% of cases
A Coruña, May 23, 2024.- Leukemia and Lymphoma are the type of cancer with the highest incidence in childhood and adolescence. In the case of women, its treatment (chemotherapy or radiotherapy) causes early ovarian failure and a high risk of sterility. Therefore, those who want to be mothers in the future will most likely have to resort to Assisted Reproduction and, in most cases, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with eggs from a donor. In Barcelona, Institut Marquès was one one of the first Assisted Reproduction centers that created a unit specialized in Oncoreproduction. Thanks to this, she has led the first international study that compares the pregnancy rate through egg donation treatment in patients who have overcome hematological cancer with women who suffer from infertility without any history of cancer. The results show that the chances of having a healthy baby are very similar (73%). This work has been presented at the 34th National Congress of the Spanish Fertility Society that is being held in A Coruña. It is safe for both the mother and the baby. The Institut Marquès data comes from 11 years of its egg donation program for women cancer survivors and demonstrate that this Assisted Reproduction treatment is safe for both mother and baby. Dr. Francesca Morra, Coordinator of the Oncoproduction Unit at Institut Marquès, points out that “with this study we emphasize the need for Multidisciplinary Oncofertility Committees in order to evaluate highly complex patients. It is necessary to evaluate the risks that cancer or oncological treatments received may have on the woman’s fertility, and the risks that may exist during pregnancy for both the pregnant woman and the baby. In this sense, patients who are seeking pregnancy should not be systematically discouraged. have recovered from cancer, since in many cases it is possible and safe.”Get informed and evaluate the optionsAccording to the Institut Marquès study, women take more than 7 years between the diagnosis of cancer and the first consultation about fertility. Dr. Morra recommends getting information as soon as possible: “We must encourage patients who have overcome cancer to consult their case with fertility experts. It is very important not to wait and evaluate their maternity options from the moment of diagnosis. In this way, Before chemotherapy, options such as egg freezing may be considered. The data from Institut Marquès support the good results achieved: 89% of the patients evaluated by its Oncoreproduction Unit are suitable to start Assisted Reproduction treatment. 82% achieve pregnancy and 7 out of 10 have become mothers in less than two years since they made the consultation. All of them are still healthy.
