Average daily spending increases by 8.8% and stands at 185 euros

Spain received more than 66.5 million tourists during the first nine months of the year, which is almost 19% more than in 2022, once again anticipating a record year for the sector in our country. And not only the number grows, but also the spending they make during their visit to Spain, which rises to more than 84.6 billion, 24% more.
After a record summer, the Spanish tourism sector is heading towards a record-breaking end to the year. In the first nine months of 2023, the number of tourists who visited Spain increased by 18.8%, exceeding 66.5 million. In the same period of 2022, 56 million tourists arrived.
If the figure for 2023 is compared with the accumulated figure for the first nine months of 2019, before the pandemic, tourist arrivals are 0.6% lower, according to data made public this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics ( INE).
In September, Spain was visited by 8.8 million international tourists, 13.6% more than in the same month of 2022. This figure is still 0.2% below that of the same month in 2019, according to the statistics of tourist movements at borders (Frontur).
For yet another month, the United Kingdom leads the number of visitors with almost 2 million tourists, 22.1% of the total and with an increase of 8.7% compared to last year. Germany and France are the following countries that send the most tourists to Spain. Germany contributes 1.3 million (13.5% more in annual rate) and France almost one million (5.9% more).
The increase in tourist spending has led to a progressive increase in spending that during the first nine months of the year grew by 24%, reaching 84,608 million euros. The most positive thing is that if this figure is compared to the data from 2019, before the pandemic, tourist spending is 15.1% higher.
In September, international tourists spent a total of 11,215 million euros in our country, which represents an increase of 22.6% compared to the same month in 2022 and 16.6% above that of the same month in 2019, according to the Tourist Expenditure Survey (Egatur) of the INE.
The average expenditure per tourist was about 1,271 euros, with an annual increase of 7.9%. For its part, average daily spending grew by 8.8%, to 185 euros.
According to data from the statistical institute, the average duration of trips by international tourists in Spain is 6.9 days, a figure similar to last year.
