In 2024 there will be no long weekends, although there will be several three-day weekends

The 2024 work calendar includes a total of 12 holidays, of which 9 will be celebrated jointly throughout Spain, the same number as this year, according to a resolution of the General Directorate of Labor published this Friday in the Official Gazette of the State (BOE). Two local holidays are added to these 12 days, for a total of 14 holidays.

Specifically, in 2024 there will be a holiday throughout Spain on Monday, January 1 (New Year), Saturday, January 6 (Epiphany of the Lord), Friday, March 29 (Good Friday), Wednesday, May 1 (Work Holiday ), on Thursday, August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin), on Saturday, October 12 (Spanish National Holiday), on Friday, November 1 (All Saints), on Friday, December 6 (Spanish Constitution Day) and on Wednesday, December 25 (Nativity of the Lord).

There are other common holidays that the autonomous communities can move to another day. This has happened with Thursday, March 28 (Holy Thursday), which will be a holiday throughout Spain except in the Valencian Community and Catalonia, but not with Friday, January 6, Three Kings’ Day, which all communities have decided to maintain.

Among the faculties recognized by the autonomous communities is also the possibility of replacing the rest on the Monday following the national holidays that coincide on Sunday with the incorporation of others that are traditional to them, as well as the option of celebrating San José (March 19). or Santiago Apóstol (July 25) in its corresponding territory.

Thus, December 9 (the Monday after the Immaculate Conception) will be a holiday in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Murcia and Melilla; Thursday, July 25 (Santiago Apóstol) will only be a holiday in Cantabria, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country, and Tuesday, March 19 (San José) will only be a holiday in Murcia and the Valencian Community.

The list of nine festivities common to the entire country in 2024 is as follows:

-January 1: New Year (Monday)

-January 6: Epiphany of the Lord (Saturday).

-March 29: Good Friday (Friday).

-May 1: Labor Day (Wednesday).

-August 15: Assumption of the Virgin (Thursday).

-October 12: National Holiday of Spain (Saturday).

-December 6: Spanish Constitution Day (Friday).

-December 25: Nativity of the Lord (Wednesday).

Two local holidays must be added to the national and regional holidays, for a total of 14 holidays per year.

A YEAR WITH SEVERAL LONG WEEKENDS

The celebration of several holidays on Monday or Friday, therefore close to Saturday and Sunday, will allow next year to have some longer weekends than usual in Spain as a whole. This is the case with Monday, January 1, Friday, November 1 and Friday, December 6.

In the communities that have chosen to celebrate Holy Thursday (March 28), which is almost all of them, there will be a four-day long weekend, and in five communities (Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja) this long weekend will be five days since they have decided to also give Easter Monday (April 1) as a holiday.

In addition, those workers who can afford to take a day off could extend the weekend due to the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin (August 15) on Thursday.

The BOE resolution specifies that in Catalonia and the Valencian Community, in addition to the 12 paid and non-recoverable national holidays, a recoverable paid holiday has been established, which means that if workers enjoy this additional holiday, they will have to recover the benefits. hours not worked.

In the case of the Valencian Community, the recoverable paid holiday has been set for Monday, June 24 (San Juan), while Catalonia must choose between January 6, April 1, June 24 and June 26. December (Saint Stephen).
