Madrid, October 17, 2023.- In line with its work to raise awareness about female intimate health and on the occasion of Menopause Day, INTIMINA, a company that offers the first range dedicated to taking care of all aspects of female intimate health, wants make this stage of life visible through her study Ageism and taboos in women of the silver generation.
The study reveals that 72% of the women surveyed consider that there is discrimination associated with age, also known as ageism, and almost half (42%) have ever suffered such discrimination firsthand.
“To this age gap, we should add the perception of comparative grievance between men and women, since those who are already in the climacteric (‘silver’ generation, over 50 years old) suffer a questioning that they do not suffer in such a pronounced way.” men of the same age group. Women of the ‘silver’ generation consider that there are taboos around their sexuality (70% of those surveyed) and menopause (74%)”, says Irene Aterido, sexologist and expert in menstrual cycle and INTIMINA collaborator.
If we delve into the comparative grievance and how it manifests itself, 78% of Spanish women affirm that society tends to belittle or ignore the symptoms and challenges associated with menopause. And this happens in spaces such as the work environment (54%), the media (46%) and social networks (46%), where almost half of women feel that there is greater discrimination towards menopause.
In fact, and in line with this perception of invisibility or undervaluation, more than half (52%) claim to have witnessed negative comments towards women who are experiencing menopause on some occasion and 22% claim to have witnessed it on numerous occasions. .
Due to this discrimination towards this stage, there are many women who, in addition to worrying about the effects of menopause on their health (63%), show concern about the effects that this phase can have on their self-esteem (47%), in their sexual or relationship life (43%) and even in their work environment (29%).
Regarding the most frequent symptoms associated with menopause, hot flashes and weight gain affect more than half of women who have stopped menstruating; but only 33% have changed some of their habits, either in relation to food or physical activity with the aim of controlling these symptoms.
“Menopause is a natural stage in women’s lives that has been made invisible or demonized by the hormonal changes that occur. At INTIMINA we consider it essential to abandon stigmas and prejudices, providing not only the vision of how women feel, but also information that allows this physiological period to be normalized,” says Pilar Ruiz, Head of Communication for INTIMINA in Spain.
