– The company continues to strengthen its commitment to the environment with the construction of one of the largest solar self-consumption facilities in Europe, which has involved an investment of 6 million euros
TARRAGONA, Spain, July 10, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — PortAventura World today inaugurated PortAventura Solar, the largest self-consumption photovoltaic plant for a tourist complex in Spain, and one of the largest in Europe. With this, the company takes another step in its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and promote the use of renewable energy with the support of Endesa, its energy partner.
The solar project, which has had the support of Endesa X, Endesa’s energy services subsidiary, has involved the installation of 11,102 solar panels on the ground that cover a total area of 6.4 hectares within the complex, equivalent to 9 fields of soccer, and that will generate a third of the energy that the park needs for its operation.
Arturo Mas-Sardá, CEO of PortAventura World, declared: “The inauguration of PortAventura Solar is an important milestone in our company’s ESG strategy, on which we are constantly working and which constitutes an absolute priority.”
Choni Fernández, Director of Sustainability for PortAventura World, explained: “For more than 28 years, we have actively worked to meet a series of social, environmental and economic commitments that have benefited all the stakeholders involved in our complex. With the plant , we respond to the Energy Transition axis of the company’s 2022-2025 Strategic Sustainability Plan”.
PortAventura Solar, with a capacity of 6.05 peak megawatts (MWp), will generate 10GWh/year -equivalent to the consumption of 3,000 homes- of clean electricity that will cover almost a third of the resort’s energy needs, thus reducing its environmental impact and contributing to the achievement of the SDGs set by the United Nations, among which is the promotion of energy efficiency in organizations. The facility will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 4,000 tons of CO² per year.
The project has been developed following a very demanding strategy of integration and landscape impact, in order to reduce its visual effect and preserve the environment. The second construction phase, already underway, will have a capacity of 3.1 megawatt peaks (MWp) and will provide an additional 5.6 GWh per year. In total, the installation of the plant has required an investment of more than 8 million euros.
