Renfe Mercancías has awarded Alstom the supply and implementation of the Ertms Baseline 3 system, and fleet parts, to implement it in 28 locomotives of the S/253 series that are currently part of the company’s mobile fleet for an amount of 11, 2 million euros.
In a statement, the company has indicated that both the supply and the installation and commissioning of the Ertms in the 28 locomotives of the 253 series must have been completed before December 31, 2025, and that the investment for the supply of the system It is situated in the context of the government’s Next Generation Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union, which will subsidize its acquisition.
The ERTMS system facilitates interoperability between different networks, unifying railway signaling and safety systems in Europe, which makes it possible to improve traffic safety and rail traffic management, in this case of goods.
To undertake the project, Renfe Mercancías has carried out a public contracting process to find a supplier that “will provide the technical and material knowledge required for the installation of this system”.
Once the supplier has been awarded, the rail transport company has informed that it will monitor the manufacture and installation of the system, as well as the necessary controls to guarantee its correct operation and commissioning within the established deadlines.
