XIAMEN, China, June 22, 2023/PRNewswire/ — On June 21, Xiamen Airlines and Airbus announced a strategic partnership focused on sustainable development during the Paris Air Show. The association aims to enhance collaboration in advancing sustainability in the civil aviation sector. Both parties have committed to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fostering the long-term growth of the aviation industry.

The partnership was initially discussed at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey. During the meeting, Xiamen Airlines Chairman Zhao Dong and Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Christian Scherer engaged in discussions that led to the concept of forming the partnership. Subsequently, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to consolidate their intentions, which had already been established at the 14th China Airshow held in Zhuhai in 2022.

The memorandum of cooperation covers several areas of collaboration, such as the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in test, cargo and commercial flights, the exploration of innovative solutions and technologies to improve the fuel efficiency of fleets, the reducing emissions and mitigating noise levels, co-implementing green travel initiatives to promote low-carbon transport, fulfilling corporate social responsibilities, fostering talent development in emerging technologies and knowledge about sustainability, and the reinforcement of cooperation in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) field.

“Sustainability has not only become a global consensus, but has also emerged as a new trend in the aviation industry, presenting both opportunities and challenges for the industry,” said Xiamen Airlines Chairman Zhao. “Over the years, Xiamen Airlines has consistently pursued sustainability, with a particular focus on green development, social responsibility and corporate governance. We look forward to deepening our partnership with Airbus to advance the industry’s low-carbon and green transition.” “.

“We are delighted at the prospect of collaborating with Xiamen Airlines in creating a sustainable future for the aviation industry,” said Xu Gang, Airbus Global Executive Vice President and Airbus China CEO. “Although the airline just joined the Airbus family of fleets earlier this year, we share a vision and ambition to lead sustainability in the aviation sector, making us crucial strategic partners.”

Xiamen Airlines has consistently demonstrated its active engagement and support for the UN SDGs. The airline’s commitment to the SDGs was evident when it became the only Chinese airline to join the United Nations Global Compact at the end of 2022. This important milestone came after an agreement signed with the UN in 2017, in which their dedication to promoting the SDGs globally was affirmed. In May 2023, the airline successfully conducted mainland China’s inaugural A321neo commercial flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in collaboration with Airbus and China Aviation Oil. This milestone was an important step towards promoting sustainability in the aviation sector. Building on this achievement, the company intends to further develop its sustainability alliance, fostering a more environmentally friendly and brighter future for the entire industry.
