Hogarcomfort: the deadlines for the energy transition of heating and ACS systems in industry and in homes are approaching. While measures and solutions are defined and specified, there are 30% more efficient gas systems in the current market, such as condensing boilers
The European Union is planning a roadmap to decarbonise all sectors of the economy to meet the 2030 sustainable development goals and the Paris agreement to keep the temperature increase below two degrees with respect to pre-industrial levels.A One of the main areas that needs to change is the way buildings are heated in Europe and around the world. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), heating in the world is responsible for four gigatonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, 10% of total global emissions. The reform of the directive on the energy efficiency of buildings obliges countries to eliminate gas and diesel boilers by 2035 and proposes that new buildings in Europe be emission-free from 2028. The proposals to replace gas and diesel boilers are mainly two: the electrification of heating through aerothermal heat pumps and hybrid models that would use heat pumps in combination with green or renewable hydrogen boilers. Green or renewable hydrogen is produced by splitting water molecules in a process known as electrolysis, creating only oxygen as a byproduct. Gray hydrogen is produced from coal, oil or natural gas by steam reforming methane and is more polluting than direct use of coal, oil or natural gas. Meanwhile, some experts in the field believe that the hydrogen production process is inefficient and more expensive than heat pumps, and would require a large amount of renewable energy and land to produce it. As the dates and deadlines approach and aspects such as replacement technologies and the feasibility of the different options become clearer, there is an intermediate step in order to care for the environment and achieve greater efficiency and energy savings: condensing boilers. They have been on the market for several years but there are still many sealed and atmospheric boilers installed in operation, which, if replaced by the new models, could mean savings of up to 30% in gas consumption thanks to condensing technology. The new models from the manufacturers of Ariston boilers, Bosch Junkers boilers, Vaillant boilers or Saunier Duval boilers, among others, in addition to having condensation technology by which energy is used in the form of heat from the gases resulting from combustion, they have an increasing capacity for modulation, which means an efficiency added to the efficiency of condensing technology. In addition, subsidies for the installation of condensing boilers are still in force in some communities. These aids are not guaranteed their continuity from 2024. From this moment on, it will be the manufacturers who must launch promotions if they intend to give another reason to encourage users to change the boiler.
