This free tool, developed by Visión y Vida with the support of the Faculty of Optics of Terrassa and AEO (Spanish Association of Optical Manufacturers), helps the user to find out which sunscreen they need according to their lifestyle and visual needs.
The first digital tool is born that helps the user to know which sunglasses filter he needs according to his protection needs and his lifestyle. The system, developed by Visión y Vida with the support of the Faculty of Optics and Optometry of Terrassa and the AEO (Spanish Association of Optical Manufacturers), seeks to raise awareness in society for this spring about the importance of protecting oneself, while that informs about all models, types of filters and characteristics of sunglasses, so that everyone can choose those that best suit their needs. In this way, anyone who wishes can access this web page and perform the visual test, after which they will be explained what degree of protection they need: “it is important that the user knows that not all eyes or people need the same protection the same systems, there can be from those that are protected with a filter 1, since they do not usually suffer from glare and do not have as much discomfort in the sun; up to a filter 4, which corresponds to people who are extremely sensitive to light, easily dazzled and with discomfort from radiation”, explains Salvador Alsina, president of Visión y Vida. Bearing in mind that for citizens, glasses continue to be only a fashion accessory and not protection, there are still 14% who still do not associate the relationship between UV exposure and eye disease. “It is known that the user only usually has a pair of glasses, which he has been able to buy in regulated channels or the top blanket (of the 21.6 million sunglasses sold per year, only 2.6 do so in the optical channel ), without understanding that if you go to the mountains, a 4 filter is required, which, in turn, is prohibited for driving, something that is much better done with polarized glasses, because they reduce braking by up to 7 meters,” explains Alsina. The association has decided to launch this tool now so that this spring people can protect themselves and help protect those around them: “we have carried out a population survey with more than 200 responses and we have verified that 56.6% of citizens carry out gifts related to health, but only 39.3% give away visual health.Among those who do, 57.5% give away sunglasses, much more than those who give away prescription glasses (11.6%), contact lenses (3 6%), vision check-ups (2.7%) or visual therapy (8%)”, explains Alsina. For this reason, now that family dates are approaching, family travel seasons and picnics and beach days, Visión y Vida wants publicize this tool and remember that every year, three million people in the world go blind due to UV exposure. In the case of minors, the situation is worse: before the age of 18 they will have already received 80% of the radiation of their entire lives, but 42.5% of them did not wear sunglasses until they were five years old. “It is time to seek advice and trust in the optics and optometry professional to find those glasses that can protect us while giving us fashion in our day to day”, concludes Alsina.
