-Nespresso, pioneer of high-quality capsule coffee, presents a new range of home compostable coffee capsules
The innovative home compostable paper pod offers another way to enjoy high-quality, sustainably sourced coffee without sacrificing a premium coffee experience. Backwards compatible with Nespresso Original machines, the new capsules will be piloted in France and Switzerland from spring 2023.
VEVEY, Switzerland, Nov. 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — For 30 years, Nespresso has been dedicated to providing its consumers with the best coffee experience in a sustainable way. Today it renews that commitment by announcing a new range of home compostable paper pods.
After three years of research and development, Nespresso has created a home compostable paper capsule that delivers the high-quality coffee the brand is known for, without compromising the taste experience. Consumer demand for compostable packaging is increasing, and it is estimated that 45% of French people already compost one or more types of bio-waste at home[1].
Guillaume Le Cunff, CEO of Nespresso, said: “Pushing the boundaries of quality coffee experiences is part of Nespresso innovation, and since we became a B Corp™ earlier this year, we are more committed than ever with the expansion of the sustainable options we offer to our consumers, we are delighted to announce our first paper-based home compostable capsule, which will complement our offering of aluminum capsules that are recyclable and made from 80% recycled aluminum It is another sustainable option, without compromising quality.”
Various aspects of the capsule feature proprietary technology, such as the biopolymer coating on the inside of the capsule that protects the coffee against oxidation.
Julia Lauricella, Head of the Nestlé System Technology Center, said: “Our 40 years of experience in coffee systems allowed us, together with the Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences, to develop a home compostable paper-based capsule, backwards compatible with Nespresso Original machines, which meets and exceeds the high expectations consumers have of Nespresso for the protection of coffee flavors and aromas. We combine a high-precision pulping process with a biodegradable layer of protection against oxidation to preserve our coffee during transport, storage and during high-pressure extraction in our machines.”
Nespresso’s coffee masters have also created four new varieties, including an organic coffee, sourced through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program specifically crafted to work in perfect harmony with these new paper capsules.
Developed as an alternative for those who prefer the composting option, the innovation will expand the sustainable options already offered to Nespresso consumers through its aluminum capsules. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable and the capsules are made from 80% recycled aluminum. Today, Nespresso offers more than 100,000 aluminum capsule collection points in 70 countries, with convenient access for almost 90% of customers.
The product is certified for composting, both domestic and industrial, by TÜV Austria, an international certification body. In some countries, such as France, where Nespresso is testing this range, these capsules are accepted in the public bio-waste container.
Huhtamaki, a global provider of sustainable packaging solutions, was one of the partners in the development of this new paper capsule.
Charles Héaulmé, CEO of Huhtamaki, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with Nespresso on the home compostable paper capsule. Part of this revolutionary innovation is the result of combining paper pulp with wood fiber, a natural material renewable, compressing it into a coffee capsule using our high-precision technology, creating another sustainable alternative for Nespresso lovers.”
Nespresso is committed to raising awareness among consumers on how to compost their capsules, as well as advocating for the acceptance of these coffee capsules in the public bio-waste/organic bin. In France, Nespresso has launched the Union des Acteurs du Compostable (UAC), an interest group that brings together public bodies, companies, recycling operators and NGOs to support the implementation of solutions that help bio-waste producers increase their classification, as well as to raise awareness among consumers about composting.
The new range will initially be piloted in France and Switzerland with the Nespresso Original system. Within a year it will be launched in other European countries.
