UN-Habitat thus recognizes the effort made by Madinah to place the citizen at the center and its commitment to progress in the direction of the Sustainable Development Goals.
MADINAH, Saudi Arabia and LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Oct. 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Holy City of Madinah has signed a Letter of Intent with the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) to join their Global Initiative of Cities with SDGs. This is a clear recognition of the firm commitment of the Saudi city to be an inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable city. In fact, Madinah’s efforts are focused on putting the welfare of citizens at the center and moving in the direction of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Madinah Region Development Authority has decided to start the incorporation process to obtain the required certification from the Global SDG Cities Initiative.
The Global SDG Cities Initiative aims to catalyze the sustainability efforts of local governments and build their capacity to localize the SDGs. It also aims to celebrate the achievements of cities in sustainable development by sharing their promising practices and policies globally. National governments have recognized that achieving the ambitious 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 requires the involvement of local governments. UN-Habitat has launched the Global SDG Cities Initiative to offer cities a clear path towards localizing the SDGs by providing planning tools, expert assistance, funding and advertising incentives.
