Community groups are urging the City of Montreal and the Legault government to make a commitment to build at least 2,500 housing units in the Côte-des-Neiges district.
In addition to the construction of these housing units in the Blue Bonnets sector on the former site of the racecourse, the authorities are called upon to support the financing of two projects already underway, Bates and Westbury.
The accessible housing situation remains worrying in the neighborhood, with 2,490 households waiting for low-rent housing.
“In the aftermath of July 1, too many households are struggling to find a suitable apartment in the neighborhood and are at risk of homelessness, health problems and violence,” said Amira Bensahli, community organizer at Femmes du Monde, an organization community of Côte-des-Neiges.
The City of Montreal rejected the ball in the camp of Quebec.
“As explained two weeks ago, no social housing projects have been suspended by our administration. We believe in their validity and in their realization. That said, the reality is that they find themselves blocked by lack of adequate funding from the Government of Quebec,” recalled the office of Mayor Valérie Plante, stressing that discussions with Quebec “are going well”.
“As for the hippodrome sector, we are staying the course on our commitments and on the planning of this site to achieve the ambitious vision of making Namur-Hippodrome a complete neighborhood for thousands of Montreal families, including the inclusion of a significant proportion of affordable, social and family housing,” the firm added.
