Amendments to the Canada Elections Act are necessary, particularly in connection with the regulation of electoral communications in the digital age, according to the report of the Speaker of the House of Commons unveiled on Tuesday.

This report aims to respond to the new challenges that encompass elections in the country and contains many recommendations in order to maintain a “safe and modern electoral framework”.

“This report initiates an important dialogue with parliamentarians and Canadians on ways to improve our electoral process. This is a crucial exercise that we must undertake periodically to ensure the vitality of our democracy in the face of changing circumstances, challenges and aspirations,” declared Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault.

Divided into two parts, the report first proposes solutions concerning the regulation of communications in the digital age. It then discusses the administration of elections as well as services to voters and candidates.

“Together, the recommendations aim to make the electoral process more transparent, more resilient and more accessible to all voters and candidates,” a statement said.
