Japan Week will be held from June 6 to 12 in Montreal. Le Journal spoke with Geneviève Borne, spokesperson for a second year of this event, which will end with the weekend of the Japanese street market Yatai MTL.

“I am in love with Japan, says the great traveler Geneviève Borne. I love all of Japanese culture: the food, the delicacy in the objects, the design, the decor and the fact that in Japan, they are both rooted in tradition and totally in the future. »

Here are her 5 reasons to participate in the event to which we should not hesitate to come dressed in a kimono if we wish, she assures us, the Japanese seeing as an honor the desire of visitors to celebrate their culture.

Traveling to Japan while staying in Montreal

Want to travel without leaving the city? This is what the Japan Week allows with its artistic performances, its various activities, its workshops and its merchant kiosks. These allow us to admire and learn more about kimonos, tableware, Japanese papers and prints, decorative objects and musical instruments from the land of the rising sun.

Enjoy Japanese street food

A map presenting the itinerary of establishments participating in Japan Week is available online and in print in various restaurants in Montreal. On it are Japanese restaurants of course, but also restaurants adding cocktails and dishes inspired by Japan to their menu for the occasion. Then, the Yatai Mtl market – a market for street food and fine Japanese products – will deploy its culinary kiosks on the weekend of June 10 to 12 in the Marché des Possibles park and in the neighboring open-air Entrepôt 77 in the Mile End.

Taste Japanese liquors

Do you think you know what sake is, this Japanese rice wine? Think again! Japan Week and the Yatai Market form the perfect duo of occasions to discover the secrets behind this nectar. Accompanied by Kuniko Fujita alias Madame Sake, great sake specialist and second spokesperson for the event, the various workshops and tastings will be instructive. We will also take the opportunity to discover Japanese whiskeys with growing popularity.

Immerse yourself in Japanese arts and culture

On June 10, taiko – the art of playing the Japanese drum – will be celebrated. On June 11 at 2 p.m., the melodies of Japanese animated films from studio Ghibli (a kind of Walt

Disney in Japan) will be delivered live by pianist Kanae Nobori and her students. The same day from 5 p.m., Entrepôt 77 will hold a great dance evening inspired by the splendor of the Japanese 80s: pop music celebrating the carelessness and effervescence of the 80s, dance, djs and local groups of Japanese origin.

Fall for shiba and akita dogs

The 3rd edition of the gathering of shiba and akita dogs – these ancient Japanese dogs with a simply crunchy face – will be held on June 11 at 1 p.m. in Laurier Park. A hundred dogs are expected in the company of their passionate owners. These will parade from the park to the Yatai market at the Marché des Possibles.
