If his future in net seems uncertain, the famous goalkeeper of the Montreal Canadiens Carey Price will know, as of this Friday evening, if he is the lucky one to obtain the Bill-Masterton trophy.

Price, who is in the running along with defenseman Zdeno Chara and forward Kevin Hayes, could win this award given to a player who has shown perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game of hockey.

The recipient will be revealed in the evening just before Game 2 of the series between the New York Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The trophy is frequently given to a player who has overcome an injury or battled an illness. It can also highlight the journey of an athlete at the end of his career. At the end of the 2020-2021 season, Philadelphia Flyers forward Oskar Lindblom was honored after battling bone cancer.

Nebulous situation

Recall that Price, 34, returned to the game on April 15 after knee surgery during the offseason. The goalkeeper had also joined the National Hockey League’s player assistance program in October.

About his future with the Canadian, the situation remains nebulous.

“We spoke with Carey. We also spoke with his agent, Gerry [Johansson], and with our doctors. I think we’re going to have the right time, but I can’t say it will be before July 13,” said Canadian general manager Kent Hughes, to this effect, earlier this week, when he is in Buffalo to meet several prospects for the next National Hockey League draft.
