According to the first information available, an altercation between two men broke out in the early evening on rue Saint-Marc, near boulevard du Maisonneuve.
At some point, one of the two belligerents would have exhibited a knife and would have used it to stab his vis-à-vis, summarized Véronique Comtois, spokesperson for the Police Department of the City of Montreal.
The victim was seriously injured and was in critical condition, she added.
No arrests had yet been made by mid-evening.
The police did not know the reason for this violent altercation. An investigation has been opened to try to find out a little more.
It was the third assault involving a knife to occur on the island of Montreal since the end of the afternoon.
