The 38-year-old confirmed he was hanging up his skates, having played the 2021-2022 season with the Polar Bears in Berlin, Germany.
Nielsen had seen the final year of his six-year contract worth $5.25 million a year bought out by the Detroit Red Wings last September. He was unable to find another formation in the National League.
In 925 games on the Bettman circuit, the center player hit the target 167 times and provided 306 assists for 473 points. He was a third-round pick (87th overall) of the New York Islanders in the 2002 draft and played the first 10 years of his career in North America with that organization.
With Berlin, Nielsen had 27 points (12-15) in 33 games. He also represented Denmark at the Beijing Olympics this winter.
