The French are increasingly sensitive to the origin and to the origin of the products they consume. The national Institute of statistics (Insee) focused on the part of the “made in France” in the consumption of households in 2015. Here’s what we can learn from the study published on Wednesday.
• A manufactured product is “made in France”
It is clear that 81% of the consumption of French households is “made in France”. This consumer trend is driven by the consumption of services (housing, transport, leisure, culture, hotels, cafes, restaurants) households, very “made in” france (91%), which account for 80% of their total budget. In contrast, only a product manufactured in three (36%) bought in 2015 was “made in France”. Machinery and equipment electrical, electronic and computer are the goods most commonly imported, to 92.5%, while the services are more difficult relocatable, are only to 9.4% and the real estate activities at 2.5%.

as a reminder, according to the Insee, the manufactured goods include everything that is food, beverages, clothing, leather, paper, cardboard, passing by the pharmaceutical products, plastic, electrical and electronic equipment, vehicles… The “made in” is a little better in the food sector, where the French have consumed 60% of manufactured food products in France.
• officers and retirees consume more “made in France”
Another lesson from this study, retirees, and executives consume more “made in France”. “The share of pension spending in housing is high, and the frames mainly consume services (recreation, culture, restaurants), consumption items, which are naturally more intense in made in France ,” says Insee. While the workers and farmers must spend a large part of their budget to food and beverages, which are “less intense” in the “made in France”.
• more and more products imported from China
The imported products consumed in France originate mainly from Germany (manufactured goods, food, transport, computer activities), United States (refined oil), China (computer products, electrical equipment, textiles), the United Kingdom, Spain, (vehicles), Italy (food), Belgium (construction), or Switzerland (electronics and optics). Between 2005 and 2015, imports of textiles and it products from china have increased substantially (+3.9 per cent) while imports of Italian products, especially in the textile, declined by 2.5 %, still notes the Insee. The imports from germany also increased (+12 per cent) over this period.
• Our consumption, “made in” comparable to that of our european neighbours
In 10 years, between 2005 and 2015, the French have consumed a little less “made in France”: in the decline of two points (from 83% to 81%), but at a level comparable with our european neighbours, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy. Within the countries of the OECD, the French consume more “made in” as Luxembourg, Ireland or Malta, but less than Brazil, the United States (the large country), and Japan.
