The 15th annual ranking of audit firm EY is based on a paradox. In 2019, China and the United States share, respectively, the first and the second place among the most attractive countries in terms of renewable energy. In other words, investors will perceive the first two economic powers of global markets in the field of green energy. But at the same time, these economic powers are also the biggest polluters of the planet: according to the latest data from the international energy Agency, China has issued in 2016 not less than 9.06 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, compared with 4.83 billion tonnes for the United States. A situation which occurs for the fifth year in a row: since 2014, China and the United States are identified as the future of clean energy and “confirm their position as leaders,” the study said.

For a few years, the two world powers have undertaken an unprecedented shift in the field of energy transition. In China, in addition to being a major economic, the development of renewable energy responds to a public health issue: in 2015 a study conducted by the university of california, Berkeley, indicated that the pollution in the middle kingdom was killing 1.6 million people each year, over 4000 people per day. To remedy this situation, the communist government has invested heavily. As of 2015, investment in renewable energy in China alone accounted for 17% of global investments, or 102,9 billion. In 2017, a five-year plan, plans to invest 361 billion in renewable electricity by 2020. Large-scale projects have seen the light of day. “The developer chinese CECEP (China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection group) has completed the largest solar project floating in the world, with a power of 70 megawatts,” said the firm EY.

on the side of The United States, the climatoscepticisme of Donald Trump and the withdrawal of the Paris agreement have not been because of the dynamism of the renewable energy sector. Wind, solar, or hydropower now account for 18 % of the electricity produced in the country, twice more than ten years ago. The share of coal in electricity production has steadily decreased, from 50% to 30% in a decade. Several States aim a goal of 50% renewable energy in their production by 2030, “despite the lack of support at the national level,” the study notes.

France on the podium

For its part, France win two seats and climbed on the podium for the first time since the creation of the barometer. “The positive evolution of the ranking of France is carried by an increase of the attractiveness on the solar pv and offshore wind,” says EY. In fact, the multiannual programmes of the energy, created by the law of energy transition for green growth, inter alia, provide for a fivefold increase of photovoltaic energy by 2030. Ads policies, approved by the foreign investors. In the field of offshore wind power, France has supported four demonstration projects of wind floating extra, after inaugurating the first installation off the coast of le Croisic, in the Loire atlantique.

In the rest of the rankings, India came down to the fourth place due to a decrease of the attractiveness on the sun and the wind. The investors are doubtful about the success of the energy transition india in regard to the quality of the available infrastructure. Germany, meanwhile, is in sixth place in the ranking due to a market already well developed and therefore less attractive.
