In this new customs regime, which will come into force in the evening of march 29 in the absence of a divorce agreement with the european Union or of the postponement of the Brexit, 87% of the imports are not subject to customs duties. Concerning the automotive sector, the government has announced that the manufacturers “would not be subject to additional customs duty on parts imported from the EU in order to avoid any disruption in the supply chains”.

This new regime would not apply to imports from countries with which the Uk has already concluded a free trade agreement, as well as approximately 70 developing countries that have preferential access to the british market. As for the border, northern irish, no customs duty or customs control should be applied. “We recognize that this approach presents challenges, including the flow of goods is not monitored in the United Kingdom, and of potential misuse”, the government said in a press release.
