The compliment is put in the spotlight at the beginning of the month of march. It can take several forms (thanks, smiles, encouragement, approval or even flattery) but responds to a single objective: to encourage the benevolence in business. If these compliments are regular and sincere, they can only enhance the cohesion and solidarity within teams. This spiral positive is usually driven by a management of the benevolent who wants to be less stressful and paternalistic than before. Now, empathy, trust, transparency and constructive comments are preferred.

The figures speak for themselves and demonstrate that the compliments are placed in a one-way relationship: they are mainly of the superiors towards the employees, and not the reverse. A study, conducted by the solution acting multi-channel MisterTemp’ about 3500 people in February 2019, reveals that nearly 3 managers in 4 compliment their teams unlike 80% of employees who report that they do not do so in return. Is this rudeness, shyness, or the fear of being thought of as the fayot of service to his colleagues? The mystery remains, and would need to be dug!

The study points out, moreover, that for more than half of the managers, to compliment its teams is “important”. A number almost identical to that of managers stated that their company develops a culture of caring. For 40% of them, this approach involves valuing the employees and/or what they are doing well for the company. “It is not a way of belittling the employees in the infantilizing, but on the contrary enhance the value of their work,” says Alexander Pham, co-president of MisterTemp’, before adding, “in living in the United States several years ago, I’m greatly steeped in the culture of the compliment where it is properly installed and I noticed its benefits on the well-being of employees.”

The kindness in the workplace: a trend beneficial to the moral, but far from being rooted in France

It is true that almost a quarter of the managers are convinced that this practice solidifies the team spirit, and 1 in 5 think that this has a positive impact on the morale of individuals. In other words, the compliments seem to present themselves as the solution to many problems. On the other hand, a figure calls out to us: although the managers are aware of the benefits of the compliment, and consider that it is important, only 1 officer on 3 raises awareness of its teams on the importance of benevolent work. Once again, this paradox is puzzling. The only assumption we can make is that this practice is not yet completely rooted in the mores of French…

A trend is confirmed on the employees’ side. Another study conducted on 400,000 people in February 2019, shows that 64.3% of compliments between colleagues, concerning especially the field staff, compared to only 35.7% of compliments of a professional nature. The employees also coincide with the opinion of the leaders regarding the positive impact for the compliment on the moral: 65,5% recognize that attention to verbal improve their sense of well-being at work. Finally, more than 3 in 4 are confident about the fact that their colleagues are sincere in their words. Also, why not compliment more in the professional setting and do not do the same with superiors, who, them also, very likely need to be encouraged from time to time?
