Facebook wants to more closely control ads with political content. In future, it is necessary to disprove who pays for advertising, said Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg on Friday. In addition, location and identity of client would be verified. The online network aims to make tampering attempts such as presumed Russian influence in US presidential campaign 2016 more difficult.

Already last October, Facebook had introduced new rules for unambiguous election advertising. Now se are being extended to advertising with a political background overall. These may include messages on controversial issues such as immigration or tensions between political and social groups. A list of topics will be worked out in cooperation with external organizations, announced Facebook.

The measures could not completely prevent abuse, wrote Zuckerberg. But it’s going to be harder to use fake Facebook accounts and pages to spread advertising – “What Russians did during 2016 election.” Russia is repeatedly confronted with accusations that it has tried to manipulate presidential campaign between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The government in Moscow rejects accusations.

Facebook wants to recruit thousands of new employees to implement new controls before congressional election in November, Zuckerberg wrote. “We are starting in US and we are going to be on rest of world in coming months.” With a view to “forthcoming important elections in USA, Mexico, Brazil, India, Pakistan and or countries”, it was top priority for him to stop attempts at influence.

Facebook is currently under pressure because of scandal about alleged absorption of data of up to 87 million users. There is a suspicion that this data was used, among or things, for voter influence in US election campaign. The Data analysis company Cambridge Analytica came to user data by means of an app that should perform a personality test. Through app, company also gained access to data of Facebook friends of test participants. In European Union, up to 2.7 million people are affected by data scandal.

On Friday, it was announced that Facebook had been informed about loss of data two and a half years ago. Cambridge Analytica assured group that company had deleted data, said Facebook managing director Sheryl Sandberg to public radio station NPR. Facebook n did not take any furr care of matter. This was a mistake. Facebook has “not done enough” to protect data of users, Sandberg said. It is also impossible to rule out that re has been furr data leakage, she said to NBC television station. Appropriate investigations are underway.
