Sina has come to be smart about FPOe. The Viennese is 22 and is looking for a new political homeland. This is why student, in truth, is in front of a blue parasol at shopping centre. The traffic roars behind her, and in between rumbles tram. It brings commuters from city centre to southwest of Vienna. “And how do you like it?” she asks one of four campaign assistants, while y push passersby blue lighters and plush bears into ir hands. And she pushes: “I don’t want to be on Nazis.”

The question is currently many in Austria: What is FPOe like? After all, about a quarter of voters are likely to vote for Liberal Party of Austria on Sunday. Social Democrats and Conservatives have not ruled out a coalition. The party is considered to be one of first to discover right-wing populism in Europe. It was founded by an SS Brigade leader for German nationals, in which post-war Republic caused Phantom pain. Once at government, it brought 14 EU states to impose sanctions against Austria.
“Oh, don’t worry, here we are all workers,” appeased one of helpers. Here, he means above all Vienna beyond central cemetery. The Vienna behind last subway stop where workers can still pay rents. It used to be dark red spot within already heavily red Vienna – today an FPOe man rules District.
Sina is curious. She was previously with ÖVP, conservative People’s Party of Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz. But that didn’t fit. “SPÖ and FPOe toger, that would be worker’s paradise,” she says.

In fact, Social Democrats have broken with decades-old dictum: no coalition with FPÖ. Instead, Chancellor and SPÖ chief Christian Kern presented a catalogue of criteria. If FPÖ were to commit to Europe, human rights, social security, equality, education and freedom of art and a few more points, government participation would be possible.

The FPOe wanted to take image of Schmuddelkinder. Because right-wing populists have always applied mselves in last election campaign. Finally, re should be a power option beyond hated grand coalition. Power is tactical, but step above all shows one thing: The FPÖ has arrived – in middle of political system, in middle of discourse and increasingly also in middle of society.
How did she manage that?
“The party can now appear relatively moderate because it has firmly occupied its subjects,” says Salzburg political scientist Reinhard Heinic. “Issue ownership” is what experts call it. is to say: because messages-Islam: evil; Politicians: corrupt – so deeply rooted in people’s minds and associated with party, it is enough to only strike keyboard. The FPÖ does not have to become obsolete.
At campaign stand in front of shopping centre re is at least no room for hate. Arab-born teenagers with Gelhaaren and gold chain flatter and are interested in FPOe lighters. A local resident in jogging trousers slouches in outworn rubber crocs on screen. Behind Sausage shack in front of his window is always so much Radau. You’ve got to do something. The helpers write down address and promise to pass info on to district mayor. Anor one murmurs from too high a rent. The next, a Greek with grey Raspelhaaren, grabs a flyer about social program and is enthusiastic: “Look here, darling, y are against Islam. Very well! “he calls his wife afterwards.
