JERSEY CITY — A 35-year-old man was shot in the head and critically injured in one of five shootings reported around the city in less than 15 hours.

Between 10 a.m. Wednesday and 12:30 a.m. Thursday, two men were injured, two guns were recovered, and three people were arrested in connection with the shootings.

Gunfire first erupted near Martin Luther King Drive and Bidwell Avenue at about 10 a.m. No one was injured or arrested in the shooting, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.

Then just before 5 p.m., a 24-year-old man was found near Arlington and Myrtle avenues with gunshot wounds to his groin and inner thigh. Police later arrested Jarius Owen-Izzard when it was determined the wounds were self-inflicted, Morrill said.

He was charged with possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Multiple shootings have previously been reported on both Bidwell and Myrtle avenues.

Shots were fired less than three hours later on Fremont Street at about 7:30 p.m.

Morrill did specify if the gunfire struck anything, though one woman who lives in a nearby apartment complex said multiple shots were fired, including at least one round that struck her building.

Police arrested two people in connection with that shooting, James Trowell, 33, of Ocean Avenue and a 17-year-old Wayne Street resident, Morrill said.

A 9mm handgun, reported stolen from New York and loaded with 14 hollow point bullets, was recovered after the shooting. Trowell was charged with certain persons not to possess a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, receiving stolen property, obstruction, resisting arrest and possession of prohibited devices for the Dum-Dum bullets, she said.

The 17-year-old was charged with resisting arrest and obstruction.

Last month, a 21-year-old man was shot less than two blocks away on Montgomery Court.

At about 9 p.m. shots were fired near Martin Luther King Drive and Myrtle Avenue, another intersection that has seen several shootings. Police recovered another 9mm handgun after the gunfire erupted. No one was injured or charged in the shooting, Morrill said.

Just after midnight a 35-year-old Harvey Street man was shot in the head on Delaware Avenue, a small block off of Duncan Avenue on the city’s West Side. He was brought to Jersey City Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition, the spokeswoman said.

The 35-year-old was also the victim of a shooting on Virginia Avenue in May, Morrill said.

The shootings come on the heels of at least two other shootings in the past week and two days after four guns were recovered during busted gang meetup at Marion Gardens.

When asked if the shootings were related or stemming from gang feuds, Morrill responded said in an email that “several arrests were made and guns recovered by the police.”
