THONOTOSASSA — Authorities were searching Tuesday for a man who got lost in the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve.
The man called 911 about his predicament, said Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Officer James Boogaerts. The commission is helping the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office with the search and received a dispatch call about 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, Boogaerts said.
Searchers are staging at John B. Sergeant Park on U.S. 301. They’re using boats to scour along the river line and a Sheriff’s Office helicopter to scan from overhead.
The wilderness preserve covers about 16,000 acres bordered roughly by Interstate 75 and U.S. 301 and includes at its northern end the 3,400-acre Hillsborough River State Park. A 13-mile section of the river runs through the preserve, which is comprised mostly of riverine forests and pine flatwoods.
