FRANKLIN TWP. — A Bridgeton police officer who serves on Vineland’s school board remains hospitalized after he was involved in a head-on collision over the weekend that claimed the life of another motorist.
Jeffrey M. Bordley, 35, of Vineland, was driving a 2005 Dodge pickup east on Clayton-Williamstown Road on Saturday around noon when his vehicle was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Impala traveling westbound, police said.
The Impala driver, Joshua M. Austin, 28, of Williamstown, was trying to pass a vehicle that had stopped to make a left turn onto Behl Road, according to Franklin Township police.
Austin crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane and slammed head-on into the pickup.
Austin was pronounced dead at the scene, while Bordley suffered multiple injuries and was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital. Two of Bordley’s children were in the vehicle and they were transported by ambulance to Cooper. Both were stable as of Monday morning, police said.
Bordley had surgery Monday and was critical but stable, police reported.
Bordley is a patrolman with the Bridgeton department and a 12-year veteran, according to Chief Mike Gaimari.
Officers have visited Cooper to check on Bordley and are staying in touch with his family, Gaimari said.
Vineland school officials are also staying in touch.
“We’re keeping him in our thoughts and prayers,” Vineland school district spokeswoman Gia Messore said Monday. Bordley is the school board’s vice president.
Assisting at the scene of Saturday’s crash were Clayton and Monroe police departments, Inspira Paramedics, Gloucester County EMS and Star Cross and Franklinville fire departments.
