From 1949 to 1955 he was a violin teacher at Zurich Conservatory. With his chamber cantata of Angel Anredung to Soul, Huber gained international recognition for first time in world music Days of International Society for New Musik 1959 in Rome. From 1973 to 1990 he held a professorship for composition at Musikhochschule in Freiburg. Among his students were German composer, musicologist and essayist Wolfgang Rihm.

Huber was a humanist and also thought politically. His work is based on spiritual questions. For example, he used texts from Bible or from medieval mystics. A central importance for him had large-scale Oratoriumskompositionen such as… inwardly full of figure…, his contribution to Dürerjahr 1971. In addition, chamber music also took an important place in his work and scenic design of music outside of oratorio and opera. 2009 he received prestigious music Award of Ernst von Siemens Foundation. He was married to a former pupil, Korean composer Younghi Pagh-Paan.
