The proposal for a wind farm ‘laydown area’ by SSE Renewables in Caithness has sparked significant opposition from local residents. The plan involves creating a temporary base to store turbine parts in a field near Thurso, which has raised concerns among the community.

Residents, led by David Bews, have come together to inform the public about SSE’s plans and highlight the potential negative impacts. A public meeting was organized, attracting about 60 attendees who expressed worries about the disruption and traffic congestion that could result from the laydown area’s use.

One of the main concerns raised is the location of the proposed site, which is designated for housing, business, retail, and amenity in the local development plan. Mr. Bews suggested that an alternative site at Scrabster Mains Farm, designated for industrial development, would be more suitable for the laydown area.

There are fears that what is meant to be a temporary solution could turn into a permanent industrial development, impacting the residential character of the area. SSE’s pre-planning notice outlines the infrastructure that will be built at the site, including storage areas, vehicle access, parking, and an office, indicating a long-term commitment.

The company is set to begin construction of the wind farm in the spring, with an upcoming information day for the community to learn more about the project. SSE Renewables has been contacted for comment on the growing opposition to their laydown area proposal.

The opposition to the wind farm ‘laydown area’ reflects a broader concern among residents about the industrialization of their community and the potential long-term impacts on the area’s development. As the debate continues, it is essential for all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue to find a solution that balances economic development with environmental and social considerations.
