Thanks to the OPU-ICSI technique carried out by the Ovohorse team, the number of embryos per mare can be maximized.
The Ovohorse team, specialists in equine assisted reproduction and cell cryopreservation, is attending SICAB for yet another year, the most important Purebred Spanish horse show in the world. For the second consecutive year, the Ovohorse team of embryologists and veterinarians is going to present the latest advances and techniques in reproductive medicine and animal cloning. In addition, at their stand number 35 (in front of ANCCE) they will exhibit scientific success stories throughout the week so that visitors can learn first-hand about the procedure of the techniques carried out in the laboratory to maximize the number of embryos per mare. Ovohorse is the perfect combination of experience, research and innovation. Enrique Criado Scholz, embryologist and CEO of the OVO Group, has developed his professional career in the best laboratories in the United States, Italy and Spain. Ovohorse also has experts in veterinary medicine, genetics and cell cryopreservation to achieve the best results in reproductive medicine. Among them, AndrĂ©s Gambini, scientific director of the project, with more than 12 years of experience in equine cloning and reproduction, and Juan Restrepo, operations director and veterinarian specializing in biotechnology and reproduction.”More than 20 years of experience in the sector of reproductive medicine has allowed us to implement processes to preserve the legacy of horses and mares.Through the scientific techniques and protocols that we develop at Ovohorse, we will be able to move the equine world towards a better future, effectively achieving offspring of specimens with a high value”, explains Enrique Criado. Specialists in OPU-ICSI OPU (Ovum Pick Up) or Oocyte Collection is the initial process to carry out ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Injection), an assisted reproduction technique. During this first phase, the eggs are extracted using the follicular aspiration technique that is guided by a transvaginal ultrasound. To perform ICSI, only one sperm is needed per egg, while in conventional insemination or fertilization, thousands of sperm are needed. Thanks to this procedure, it is possible to obtain up to 10 eggs in just one extraction. Therefore, in one year the Ovohorse team could get up to 20 embryos. Once the embryos are generated, they can be vitrified and stored in liquid nitrogen indefinitely in a genetic bank, until the moment of transferring the embryo to a recipient mare. This means that stallions or mares with fertility problems or who are in competition do not have to interrupt their sports career to carry out the process. Another advantage of the OPU-ICSI technique is that it can be performed at any stage of the cycle. reproduction of the mare throughout the year and up to twice a month. Ovohorse’s team of professionals always carry out a preliminary study to determine if the animal is in good health to start the procedure. Training courses for veterinarians One of the novelties that they also present at SICAB are their specialized training courses for vets. Theoretical and practical courses on OPU-ICSI given by Ovohorse specialists in Marbella, where they will present their knowledge and research. In addition, the participants will have the possibility of carrying out their own follicular aspiration and will learn in depth how the oocyte is handled in the laboratory (selection, refrigeration and transport).
